How to evaluate freight market and transit-time claims
Freight numbers circulate with their methodology stripped off. A few questions restore most of what was removed.

A number about freight arrives already stripped. Somewhere upstream it had a unit, a population, a collection method and a reference period. By the time it reaches a slide or a landing page it has a figure and an adjective.
The questions below put most of that back. They are not sophisticated — they are the questions the original publisher answered and the repetition dropped.
What was actually measured
Road freight volume can be reported as tonnes moved or as tonne-kilometres, and these behave differently. A tonne-kilometre is the movement of one tonne over one kilometre[1], so it combines mass with distance: shifting freight onto longer routes raises tonne-kilometres without a single extra tonne being carried.
Eurostat's own figures show how far apart the two framings sit. For 2025 it reports EU road freight transport of 1 886 billion tonne-kilometres and nearly 13.3 billion tonnes[1]. Those describe the same activity. A claim about "growth in road freight" that does not say which one it means is not yet a claim.
The general rule: find the unit before reacting to the size. Tonnes, tonne-kilometres, consignments, vehicle movements, loaded vehicle-kilometres and revenue are all reported as "freight volume" somewhere, and they move independently of each other.
Who is in the population
The second question is what the number counts.
Eurostat's road freight statistics cover national, international, cross-trade and cabotage transport[1]. Those are distinct categories, and a figure for one is not a figure for another. National transport within a large member state can dominate a total in a way that says nothing about cross-border capacity on the lane you care about.
So: which countries, which operators, which movements, and does it include or exclude own-account transport, light vehicles, empty running and transit?
How it was collected
Road freight statistics of this kind are generally built from sample surveys of hauliers in the reporting countries[1] rather than from a census of every journey.
That is normal and does not undermine the figure. It does mean a sampled estimate has uncertainty, and that small year-on-year differences may not be differences at all. A source that reports a change without any sense of its precision is asking for more confidence than the method supports.
When it was measured, and when it was said
Two dates, and the gap between them is where most misreadings live.
Official transport statistics are published with a lag; the reference period a figure describes is often a year or more before the page you are reading was written, and further still before the page that cites it. A number is not wrong for being from an earlier period, but it is wrong to present it as the current state.
Any freight claim worth acting on has a reference period attached. If it does not, that is the first thing to recover.
Transit-time claims specifically
Market statistics at least have a methodology somewhere. Transit-time claims frequently have none.
"Two days Rotterdam to Prague" is not a fact about a route. It is a claim about a service, and the questions are:
- Two days from what? From collection, from the goods being ready, from the vehicle departing a facility, or from a booking being confirmed? These are not the same start.
- To what? Arrival in the destination country, arrival at the site, or completed unloading within a receiving window?
- Under what service? A direct dedicated movement and a consolidated network movement over the same lane are different journeys.
- Typical, or guaranteed? A typical transit is an observation. A guarantee is a contractual commitment with a consequence attached. They are frequently written the same way and are not remotely the same thing.
- Measured over what? A transit time is a distribution, not a number. The useful question is what proportion of movements achieved it, over what period.
Who is making the claim, and what follows from it
A number in a carrier's marketing describes a service that carrier is selling. A number in a national statistics release describes a population that office measured. Both can be accurate; they are answering different questions, and only one of them was written to be comparable with anything.

A short checklist
- What is the unit — tonnes, tonne-kilometres, consignments, vehicle movements, revenue?
- Which population — which countries, operators and movement types?
- How was it collected — census, sample, or a model?
- What period does it describe, and when was it published?
- Is it typical or guaranteed, observed or promised?
- Who benefits if it is believed?
- Can the original be opened, or only the article citing it?
The last question resolves more than the rest combined. A claim whose source cannot be reached is not a claim that has been checked.
