For much of what passes through Amsterdam, the flight is the predictable part. The hours on the ground at each end are where a shipment is won or lost.
An air gateway inside a dense freight region
Amsterdam sits in a dense freight region. A deep-sea container gateway, an air hub, inland waterways and a dense motorway network occupy a small area, and goods can change mode here without travelling far to do it.
That concentration is the hub's defining characteristic. Elsewhere, choosing between sea and air means choosing between two different journeys to two different places. Here the alternatives converge on the same distribution region, so the decision is closer to a pure comparison of cost, speed and risk, without the geography confusing it.
The mode itself is not something LogisticID arranges at present. European road freight through third-party carriers is the current business, and air sits in the planned column.
Perishables, pharmaceuticals and the gaps nobody books
A large share of what moves through a hub of this kind is time-sensitive in a physical rather than a commercial sense: cut flowers and plants, fresh produce, seafood, and temperature-controlled pharmaceutical and laboratory goods. These are not merely urgent. They deteriorate, and deterioration is not recoverable by arriving slightly late with an apology.
The critical insight is that the cool chain almost never breaks in the aircraft hold. It breaks in the transfers: on the apron waiting to be loaded, in a handling facility between one controlled space and the next, on the tail of a truck at the delivery point. Those are the gaps that are least often specified in a booking and most often responsible for a claim.
So the useful questions are about the ground. What temperature regime applies at each handover, who is responsible for maintaining it, what monitoring exists, and what the receiving site will do if a consignment arrives outside its receiving hours. Requirements for temperature-controlled and regulated goods vary by commodity, destination and lane, and must be confirmed for the specific shipment.
Consolidation, deconsolidation and onward distribution
A gateway hub does two jobs that mirror each other. Outbound, it consolidates many small consignments from a wide surrounding area into loads sized for a long-haul departure. Inbound, it breaks large arrivals down into the individual consignments that will be delivered across a continent.
The inbound job is where more value is created than most shippers realise. Cargo arriving on air pallets has to be dismantled, identified, matched to documents and rebuilt for road transport, and how well that is planned determines whether goods leave the same day or sit waiting for a truck that was never booked.
The onward road network is the reason a hub in this region works. A great many European destinations are within comfortable driving distance, and part of what is sold as an air journey within Europe is in fact performed by truck under the air waybill. That keeps costs sensible and adds a leg whose progress is less visible than a flight's.
Capacity is a routing input, not a background condition
Air capacity is not uniform, and it is not a given. It comes in two forms: space in the hold of a passenger aircraft, which exists because a passenger route exists, and space on aircraft flown for cargo. The first is subject to decisions about passenger networks that have nothing to do with freight; the second is planned around cargo and generally handles larger and heavier pieces.
Airports also differ in how much room they have to grow, how their operating conditions are regulated, and what that means for freighter access in particular. A shipper should treat the availability of a specific type of capacity on a specific route at a specific time as something to verify rather than assume, especially for anything oversized.
The practical version of this advice is unglamorous. Ask early, describe the cargo accurately, and find out what is genuinely available before committing to a delivery promise downstream.

- Name the party responsible for the goods at each handover, because temperature and condition disputes turn on exactly that.
- Inspection, sanitary and customs requirements vary by commodity and jurisdiction and must be confirmed with the relevant authority.

A port or cargo hub is a transfer point. The route still needs a precise origin, destination and handover plan.
