Where rail sits
Rail freight occupies the middle of the trade-off that sea and air define at either end. Where a rail routing exists and is functioning, it is normally slower and cheaper than air, and quicker and dearer than sea. That is the whole commercial argument for it, and it only holds where infrastructure and circumstances allow. That is a fact about a particular corridor at a particular moment, not a property of the mode.
Rail is also a scheduled, capacity-constrained mode rather than an on-demand one. Trains run to plans set by infrastructure managers and operators, and cargo joins those plans rather than the reverse. That makes rail well suited to steady, repeating volume and poorly suited to a one-off requirement that has to move immediately.
Rail freight is not yet part of what LogisticID arranges. The current business is European road freight coordinated through third-party carriers. What follows sets out how rail works so that it can be evaluated honestly when the question arises.
Rail is terminal-to-terminal, and that changes the plan
A train serves terminals, not premises. Every rail movement therefore carries a road leg at one end and usually at both, and those legs are not a detail. They can dominate the cost and the elapsed time whenever a terminal sits far from the origin or the destination.
So a rail plan is really three plans — road, rail, road — with two handovers between them. The main leg is usually the most predictable part of the journey. The variability lives at the terminals and on the roads leading to them, which is where a plan holds together or comes apart.
Terminal dependency is absolute. If the terminal at either end cannot handle the loading unit, is not open when the vehicle arrives, has no room to hold the unit, or has poor road access, nothing about the rail leg compensates. Terminal capability is something to establish before a routing is offered rather than afterwards.
The intermodal handover
An intermodal movement is one where the cargo stays inside the same loading unit while the vehicle beneath it changes. Nothing is unpacked at the transfer. The unit is lifted, and custody passes.
Two things need to be clear at every handover. The first is who is responsible for the unit at each moment, because responsibility does not always change hands at the instant the box moves. The second is the condition of the unit and its cargo when it changed hands, which is why interchange checks and their written records matter far more here than on a direct road movement.
Some routings involve more than a lift. Where track gauge, coupling arrangements or regulatory regimes differ, units are transhipped between wagons or wagons are exchanged at a border. Every such point is a scheduled operation performed by another party, and every one of them is a place where a plan can wait.
Why corridor viability has to be checked every time
Rail corridors are not a stable backdrop. Whether a given routing is available, and whether it is sensible, depends on conditions that change and that sit outside the control of anyone arranging freight.
- Political and regulatory conditions, including sanctions and border arrangements, which can close or reopen a routing at short notice.
- Infrastructure works, which remove capacity from a section for planned periods.
- Capacity and equipment availability, which move with demand and with where empty units happen to have accumulated.
- Seasonal and weather restrictions on particular sections of route.
- Cargo insurance and acceptance conditions, which follow all of the above rather than lead it.
What that means for anything written down
Nothing here should be read as a statement that any particular corridor is currently operating, reliable or suitable. Corridor status is a present-tense fact with a short life, and it has to be established at the time of enquiry with the operators concerned. A page that named a working routing would be wrong sooner than it would be useful.
The durable part is the structure: road legs at the ends, terminals that decide what is possible, handovers that need documenting, and a schedule that the cargo joins rather than sets. Those are the things worth planning around, whichever corridor turns out to be open.
Where it fits
When this is the right choice.
- Volume repeats on the same origin and destination pair, so a scheduled mode can genuinely be planned around.
- The cargo is too costly for air, while sea transit sits badly with the inventory position.
- Both ends are within a sensible road distance of terminals that can handle the required loading unit.
- The lead time can absorb the variability that comes with fixed schedules and intermodal handovers.
- The consignment fills a standard loading unit, so nothing has to be repacked at either transfer.
Where it does not
When something else suits better
- The requirement is urgent and one-off. A scheduled mode is the wrong instrument for that.
- Either end is a long road leg from a suitable terminal, which erodes the cost advantage quickly.
- The current status of the corridor cannot be established, in which case there is no honest plan to offer.
- The cargo needs conditions the terminals or the equipment along the route cannot maintain without interruption.
- The load is out of gauge, or needs lifting arrangements that not every terminal on the route has.
Preparing a request
What to have ready.
- Origin and destination as actual locations rather than nearest cities, because the road legs are decided by them.
- What the cargo is, how it is packed, and whether it fills a standard loading unit.
- Gross weight and dimensions, and whether any piece is out of gauge.
- Whether the goods need temperature control or any other condition maintained without a break.
- Whether the volume repeats, and how regularly, since scheduled modes reward predictable flows.
- The required delivery window, and how much variation the receiving operation can absorb.
- The commercial terms, and which party is responsible for formalities at each border crossed.
