Freight Forwarding Considerations for Construction Materials
Construction freight is heavy, low in value for its weight, and delivered to places that were not designed to receive vehicles. The site is usually the hard part.

Dense cargo that runs out of weight before it runs out of space
Cement, aggregate, brick, block, tile, steel and similar materials are heavy for their size. A vehicle loaded with them reaches its permitted weight while a large part of its space is still empty, which inverts the usual freight instinct that a full-looking vehicle is an efficient one.
This is the defining commercial fact of the sector. Value per tonne is low, transport is a significant share of delivered cost, and the distance goods travel is therefore under constant pressure. Heavy materials are sourced closer to where they are used than lighter goods are, and a long haul has to be justified by something other than price.
It also affects how loads are built. Concentrated weight must be distributed across the vehicle bed rather than piled in one place, and a load that is legal in total can still be wrong if it is arranged badly. Permitted weights and axle limits differ by country and vehicle configuration and must be confirmed for the route in question.
The delivery site is the hardest part of the job
Most freight is delivered to premises built to receive it. Construction materials are delivered to sites that are, by definition, unfinished. There may be no dock, no hard standing, restricted access, overhead cables, a narrow entrance, mud, a slope, or a delivery point that changes as the build progresses.
The single most useful question is how the material will come off the vehicle. If there is no forklift on site, the vehicle must bring the means of unloading with it, whether that is a tail lift, a vehicle-mounted crane or something else, and that choice must be made when the vehicle is booked rather than when it arrives.
Access limits also constrain the vehicle itself. A site reachable only by a small rigid vehicle cannot receive an articulated one however economic that would be, and a load planned for one large delivery may have to become several smaller ones. That is a cost, and it is a cost best discovered before the material is loaded.
Programme, sequence and the cost of arriving early
Construction runs to a programme in which trades follow one another, and materials are needed in that sequence. Arriving late is obviously disruptive. Arriving early is disruptive too, and this is the part outsiders underestimate.
Material delivered before it is needed has to be stored somewhere on a site with limited space, where it obstructs work, is exposed to weather, and is at risk of damage or theft. Sites therefore run tight delivery slots, and a vehicle arriving outside its slot may be turned away rather than accommodated.
Weather adds a further layer. Certain works cannot proceed in some conditions, and a programme that slips takes the delivery schedule with it. Freight planning for construction is planning against a moving target, which is an argument for keeping arrangements flexible rather than committing far ahead.
Breakage, weather and rejected loads
Many construction materials are brittle, and the ones that are not are often surface-sensitive. Tiles, sanitary ware, glass, plasterboard and finished stone are damaged by exactly the handling that heavy goods usually receive, and the damage is frequently discovered only when a bundle is opened at the point of use.
Moisture is the other recurring cause of loss. Plasterboard, cement products and timber degrade when wet, and a sheeted load is not a sealed one. Whether material can stand in the open at destination is a real question, not a formality.
A rejected delivery on a construction site is expensive out of proportion to its value, because it takes the vehicle, the unloading equipment, the site's time and the programme with it. Loading and securing this cargo properly is cheaper than any of the alternatives.

- Identify brittle, surface-sensitive or moisture-sensitive materials so they are not loaded as though they were robust.
- Say whether the delivery point is likely to move as the build progresses, which affects instructions for the driver.
