Port of Antwerp-Bruges

This port combines an inland site far up a tidal river with a coastal site on the North Sea. The two halves do different work, and choosing between them is the first routing decision a shipper makes here.

  • Extensive covered quayside warehousing used for break-bulk, steel, paper and other cargo that cannot be stored outdoors
  • Tank storage and pipeline links serving the chemical and petrochemical cluster inside the port area

  • Establish whether the cargo belongs at the inland site or the coastal site before anything else; the two handle different trades
  • Treat documentation and cargo cut-offs as firm, because river access and tidal windows make terminal calls scheduled events
  • For break-bulk and project cargo, confirm covered storage and handling arrangements at the same time as the sea leg
  • Check barge connection reliability rather than assuming it, since small parcels can wait at busy deep-sea terminals
  • Dangerous goods requirements vary by substance, packing, mode and jurisdiction; have the classification and documentation confirmed by a competent party for each consignment
