The port is spread across a harbour shared by two states, with most container handling on the New Jersey shore. It serves a dense metropolitan consumption market and a distribution region that extends well beyond it.

A harbour, not a waterfront
The port occupies a harbour spanning two states, and its facilities are not in one place. The bulk of container handling takes place on the New Jersey side, with further terminals elsewhere in the harbour and additional berths handling vehicles, break-bulk and bulk commodities. The name describes a port district rather than a single site.
Vessel access runs through channels and beneath a harbour bridge, so air draft and channel depth are live constraints here in a way they are not at an open-coast port. A shipper does not manage these directly, but they explain why particular services call and others do not, and why the answer can change as the fleet on a trade changes.
The market behind the quay
The immediate hinterland is a large consumption market, and much of the arriving cargo is consumer goods destined to be sold within the surrounding urban region. Food and beverages, furniture, apparel, household products, building materials and pharmaceutical and life-science freight all feature strongly, the last reflecting the industry cluster in the surrounding states.
Beyond the metropolitan area the port distributes into New England, the mid-Atlantic states, upstate New York and, by rail, into the interior and across the Canadian border. It is therefore both a local delivery gateway and a long-haul origin, and those two roles compete for the same terminal capacity.
Where the warehouses actually are
Land close to the harbour is scarce and expensive, and the road network around it is heavily used by traffic that has nothing to do with freight. As a result much of the distribution capacity serving this gateway sits well inland, along the interstate corridors running west and south of the metropolitan area.
That geography changes how a routing should be evaluated. A drayage move from the port to a distribution centre may be a substantial journey rather than a local trip, and it can be exposed to urban congestion at predictable times of day. Where a warehouse sits relative to those corridors is often a bigger cost variable than the choice of terminal.
All-water against the land bridge
For Asian cargo destined to the eastern half of the United States, this port competes directly with a Pacific entry followed by a transcontinental rail leg. An all-water routing takes longer on the water and puts the cargo close to the consuming market on arrival; a Pacific routing is faster to the coast and then depends on inland rail performance.
There is a second variable: an all-water service from Asia can reach the East Coast by more than one ocean routing, and those routings are exposed to different constraints and different disruptions. Which one a service uses is a property of the service, not of the port, and it should be established when the routing is chosen rather than discovered later.
Winter weather is a genuine planning factor on this coast. It affects road movements, terminal operations and occasionally vessel schedules, and the sensible response is a realistic buffer in the delivery plan during those months rather than a fixed allowance published as though it were reliable.
