Rotterdam sits where the Rhine meets the North Sea, which is the whole explanation for what it does. Its hinterland extends far beyond the Netherlands because the river carries containers deep into the European interior.

A gateway defined by a river
Rotterdam is a deep-sea port at the mouth of the Rhine, and that position rather than any facility explains its role. Cargo landed here can move inland by barge along a navigable river system that reaches the German industrial region, the upper Rhine and Switzerland, without a road or rail leg at all.
This gives the port a hinterland that ignores national borders. A consignment for southern Germany or Switzerland is genuinely in Rotterdam's catchment, not merely reachable from it, and that is why gateway choice in north-west Europe is a commercial decision rather than a matter of picking the nearest coastline.
More than containers
Container handling is concentrated in the seaward part of the port, on ground built out towards deep water so that large vessels do not navigate far upriver. Around it sits an energy and petrochemical complex handling crude, refined products, chemicals and gases, together with dry bulk trades in ores, coal and agricultural commodities, and roll-on roll-off services to the United Kingdom, Ireland and Scandinavia.
For a forwarder the significance is that a shipper with tank containers, drums, packaged chemicals or bulk liquids is not an unusual customer here. The handling capability, the storage and the regulatory familiarity exist because the local industry requires them. Requirements for dangerous goods nonetheless vary by substance, packing and mode, and must be confirmed for each consignment.
How cargo leaves
Inland barge is the distinctive option and moves a large share of containers to inland terminals along the river. It is economical and takes containers off the road network entirely. It is also slower than road and dependent on river conditions: prolonged low water restricts how much a barge can load and can disrupt the service pattern for an extended period, which is a genuine planning risk rather than a rare event.
Rail runs on a dedicated freight line towards the German border and onward into central Europe, which suits steady flows to an inland terminal. Road remains the flexible option and the only one that reaches most doors. Shortsea and feeder sailings connect the port to the Baltic, Iberia, the British Isles and Scandinavia, so a deep-sea call here can serve destinations that no deep-sea service reaches directly.
Choosing between north European gateways
Rotterdam, Antwerp-Bruges, the German North Sea ports and, for some cargo, the Baltic and Adriatic ports compete for substantially the same hinterland. The right one for a shipment depends on where the goods are going, which services call where, the cost and reliability of the inland leg, and whether the cargo suits barge, rail or road.
It is worth resisting the assumption that the nearest port wins. An inland destination served by a frequent barge or rail connection from a further port can be cheaper and more reliable to reach than one served only by long-distance road haulage from a closer one. The inland leg is where the difference usually lies, and it is the part most often estimated rather than checked.
