Port of Shanghai
Shanghai is the sea access for the Yangtze River Delta and, through the river itself, for a long stretch of inland China. Its container operations are split between an offshore deepwater site and estuary berths, and that split shapes how cargo reaches the quay.

A gateway with two quite different waterfronts
Shanghai does not handle its deep-sea container traffic in one place. Estuary berths sit on the river side of the city, reachable by ordinary road haulage from the surrounding industrial districts. Deepwater container handling sits offshore on reclaimed island ground, connected to the mainland by a long road causeway and worked by ships too large for the river approach.
For a shipper the practical consequence is that two bookings on the same trade can involve very different first miles. The offshore site is reached by road along a single fixed link, so drayage there is a longer and less forgiving run than a trip to a river berth. Where a factory sits, and which berth the chosen service calls at, together decide how much time has to be built in before the cargo cut-off.
What moves through it
The traffic is dominated by containerised manufactured goods: electronics and their components, machinery and parts, household and consumer products, textiles and garments, packaged chemicals and a wide spread of industrial intermediates. Much of it originates in the industrial districts around the port itself, which is why the place behaves as a manufacturing outlet rather than a pure transhipment point.
Alongside the containers the estuary handles bulk, break-bulk and project consignments, and the wider metropolitan area is also a substantial air cargo gateway. A shipper with cargo that turns out to be too urgent for the sea leg can therefore change mode without changing region, which is not true of every manufacturing cluster.
The river is part of the port
The Yangtze reaches deep into central China, and river barge services connect inland river ports to the estuary. For factories upriver this is often the economic way to reach an ocean service, and it changes the shape of a schedule: barge legs are slower than road and are exposed to river conditions, so the time buffer before the ocean cut-off has to be real rather than nominal.
This inland reach is also why Shanghai draws cargo from a hinterland far larger than its own province. A consignment consolidated well upriver can be quoted through Shanghai without any road leg long enough to make an alternative gateway attractive.
Where shippers get caught out
A frequent problem is treating a booking as a single deadline. There is a cargo cut-off at the terminal, a separate and earlier documentation cut-off, and in practice an internal deadline for having the goods packed and released. Missing the earliest of these forfeits the sailing even when the goods are physically ready.
Seasonal pressure is the other recurring factor. Demand peaks before major holiday shutdowns, weather can interrupt operations for periods that no schedule anticipates, and when space tightens the cargo that moves is the cargo that was booked early and documented cleanly. None of this can be quoted as a number in advance, which is precisely why it belongs in planning rather than in a rate.

What to consider when routing through here.
- Confirm which berth or terminal the booked service actually calls at before planning the drayage; the offshore and river-side waterfronts are not interchangeable
- Work backwards from the documentation cut-off, not the vessel departure, when setting a cargo readiness date
- A barge leg from an inland river point is cheap but slow and weather-exposed; treat the buffer as part of the routing, not as contingency
- Where a factory sits between two delta gateways, the choice is decided by drayage, terminal conditions and which port the service calls — not by distance alone
- Formalities, permitted packaging and inspection requirements vary by commodity, shipment and destination; confirm them for the specific consignment with the relevant authority or an appointed customs representative
