Chicago is an interior air cargo hub. Its value is not closeness to a coast but the distance a shipment no longer has to travel overland once it lands.
An inland hub, and why that is the point
Most of the well-known air cargo gateways are coastal. Chicago is not, and that is precisely what it is chosen for. Freight flown into an interior hub has already crossed the part of the continent that would otherwise have been driven, which converts a long surface leg into flight time.
The surrounding region is a manufacturing and distribution catchment rather than a port hinterland, so the cargo mix leans towards industrial and commercial goods rather than the import flows that concentrate at a seaboard. That changes the character of what moves and the sort of deadlines attached to it: an inbound part for an assembly line is a different kind of urgent from a retail replenishment.

Where the flight ends and the surface network begins
An interior hub earns its position by being a junction. Road transport radiates outwards in every direction rather than inland from a coastline, and rail interchange sits in the same region, which makes the hub a natural place for a long-distance shipment to change from air to surface carriage.
The handover is where the plan usually succeeds or fails. Air freight arrives on aircraft pallets and containers and has to be broken down before it can be loaded for road. Whether the consignment stays intact for one delivery or is split for several destinations decides how much handling happens here, and every handling step is an opportunity for a piece to be delayed or damaged.
A shipper who treats the flight as the shipment and the road leg as an afterthought will find that the afterthought is where the time goes. The road movement out of an interior hub should be arranged with the same care as the flight into it.
Capacity at an interior hub is a different question
Air cargo moves either in the belly of a passenger aircraft or on an aircraft configured purely for cargo. At a coastal gateway with heavy long-haul passenger traffic, bellyhold capacity is abundant and international freight rides along with travellers. At an interior hub the balance is different, because international passenger routes serving an inland city are fewer than those serving a coastal one.
The consequence is that inland international air capacity leans more on freighter operations and on connections through other hubs. Both are legitimate, and both behave differently. Freighter capacity is planned for cargo, is more tolerant of large single pieces, and is less exposed to changes in passenger demand. A routing that connects through another hub adds a transfer, and a transfer adds a point at which a shipment can miss its onward movement.
None of this makes an interior hub worse. It makes the availability question specific to the route rather than general, which is why it has to be asked per shipment rather than assumed from experience of a different lane.
Weather, connections and the cost of a missed handover
Interior hubs in continental climates carry a seasonal exposure that coastal ones carry differently. Winter conditions can interrupt aircraft movements, ground handling and road departures at the same time, and the effect on a shipment is cumulative: a delay to the flight arrives at a road leg that was already booked for a particular day.
This matters most to consignments that were flown precisely because they were late already. The realistic mitigation is not a promise but a plan — a delivery window with some tolerance in it, a clear instruction about what to do if the onward truck is missed, and a named party at destination who can act without waiting for a decision from another time zone.
Seasonality also affects what the hub is asked to carry. Demand on industrial supply chains does not peak at the same time as retail demand, and a shipper competing for capacity should know which peak they are in.
Handling
What happens to cargo here.
- Consignments arriving as built-up air units are broken down before road loading; splitting a shipment for several destinations multiplies that handling.
- Cargo held at an interior hub while an onward truck is arranged is cargo sitting still, and storage arrangements should be settled before it arrives, not during.
- Industrial cargo often arrives crated rather than palletised, and crates need equipment and space to handle that loose cartons do not.
- Air cargo security screening applies regardless of how far inland the hub sits.
- Temperature-sensitive goods are exposed during ground handling and truck loading, which are the parts of the journey least often specified in a booking.

What to consider when routing through here.
- Compare flying deeper inland against landing at a coastal gateway and driving, using total time and total cost rather than flight time alone.
- A routing that connects through an intermediate hub introduces a transfer; ask what happens to the shipment if the onward movement is missed.
- Book the road leg out of the hub at the same time as the flight, so the two are one plan rather than two.
- Allow for the seasonal exposure of a continental interior when committing to a delivery date in winter.
- Formalities and commodity requirements differ by shipment and jurisdiction and must be confirmed with the relevant authority or a licensed customs broker.
Beyond the gateway
Plan the inland leg as part of the same movement.
A port or cargo hub is a transfer point. The route still needs a precise origin, destination and handover plan.
