Los Angeles is where trans-Pacific air freight meets a continent of road transport. Cargo that lands here is usually nowhere near finished travelling.
A Pacific gateway with a continent behind it
Los Angeles sits on the western edge of North America. For freight moving east across the Pacific it is a first point of entry, and for freight moving west it is a last point of departure. That position shapes what the hub is useful for, and the useful part is mostly what happens after the aircraft is unloaded rather than while it is in the air.
Southern California is a large consumption market in its own right, so a share of what arrives stays close by. The rest begins a domestic journey that can be long. A shipper choosing a gateway is really choosing where the international leg stops and the domestic leg starts, and that choice is worth making deliberately rather than inheriting it from whoever quoted first.

Sea and air competing for the same cargo
Southern California is served by deep-sea container terminals as well as by the air hub, and the two sit within reach of the same distribution estates. That creates a comparison shippers face here more sharply than in most places: the same goods can plausibly arrive by sea or by air into the same warehouse, and the two are frequently compared badly.
Compared badly means comparing freight cost alone. Sea freight is bought largely by the container, so a full box carries a wide range of weights for a similar price. Air freight is bought on chargeable weight, so density decides the bill. The honest comparison is total landed cost against total landed cost, including the money tied up in stock while it is in transit, the cost of holding safety stock against a slower mode, and the cost of whatever happens if the goods are late.
There is a second, less comfortable pattern. When an ocean flow is disrupted, air into the same region becomes the fallback — and it becomes everyone's fallback at the same moment. Capacity and price respond to that. A plan that assumes air will simply be available as an emergency valve is a plan with an untested assumption in it.
Bellyhold and freighter capacity, and why the difference matters
Air cargo travels in two structurally different ways. Some of it flies in the hold of a passenger aircraft, below the cabin, on flights that exist because people are travelling. The rest flies on aircraft configured to carry cargo only. The distinction is not a technicality: it determines what capacity exists, when it exists, and what shapes it can take.
Bellyhold capacity follows the passenger network. It appears and disappears with passenger schedules and passenger demand, for reasons that have nothing to do with freight. Freighter capacity is planned around cargo, and it will generally accept heavier and larger single pieces than a passenger hold will.
For a shipper the practical consequence comes early. The dimensions and weight of the largest single piece can decide which of the two is even possible before price is discussed at all. A light but oversized item can be limited to freighter capacity purely by its shape, and discovering that after a booking is a poor way to learn it.
The road leg that follows the flight
Air cargo is generally built up onto aircraft pallets or containers before flying and broken down again after landing. That build-up and break-down is real work occupying real time, and it belongs in the plan rather than being discovered inside it. Goods do not go straight from the aircraft onto a truck.
After that, the shipment is a road shipment. Trucking within the metropolitan area is short; trucking across the country is not. Buying air freight for speed and then attaching a slow, unbooked surface leg spends the premium and returns nothing, which is one of the most common ways an urgent shipment quietly stops being urgent.
The receiving end deserves the same attention. Whether the delivery site has an appointment system, what hours it receives, and whether it can handle a full air pallet rather than loose cartons all change the last part of the journey — and all of it is knowable in advance.

- Cargo is consolidated onto aircraft-specific pallets and containers for the flight and broken down afterwards; both steps take time that belongs in the schedule.
- Security screening applies to air cargo, and a consignment that cannot be screened as packed may have to be opened and repacked.
- Perishable and temperature-sensitive goods depend on how quickly they move between controlled environments, not only on the temperature of the aircraft hold.
- A single oversized or heavy piece can restrict a shipment to freighter capacity regardless of its total weight.
- Goods measured at acceptance are charged on what is presented; a quotation given against estimated dimensions can move when the pieces are gauged.

- Decide deliberately whether the international leg should end at the coast and continue by road, or continue by air closer to the final destination.
- Capacity and pricing on a long-haul route differ by direction, so an outbound plan does not predict the return.
- Peak periods and disruption elsewhere in the supply chain change availability here, because air is the fallback when other modes fail.
- Confirm which party is appointed to handle formalities and delivery at destination before booking, not afterwards.
- Customs, security and commodity requirements vary by shipment, commodity, jurisdiction and lane, and must be confirmed with the relevant authority or a licensed customs broker.
