A hub in the middle of the market it serves
Frankfurt is a continental hub rather than a coastal gateway. Europe's industrial and commercial density surrounds it in every direction, and the driving distance to a great many European cities is short by intercontinental standards. That single geographic fact governs how the hub is used.
A coastal gateway exists to receive freight from somewhere far away and pass it inland. A central hub does that too, but it also acts as an assembly point: consignments from many surrounding countries are gathered here for one long-haul departure, and arriving long-haul consignments are dispersed from here across the same area.

One of the most useful things to understand about European air freight is that a considerable amount of it moves by road. Where two airports are close enough for a truck to beat the total time of a short flight plus two rounds of ground handling, the cargo is trucked — and it can be trucked while remaining under the air waybill covering the whole journey. This is generally called a road feeder service.
The effect is that the airport named on a booking is not always the airport the goods physically passed through, and a shipper who expects to track a flight number for a leg that was always going to be driven will be confused by their own shipment. Understanding this in advance prevents a lot of unnecessary alarm.
It has a practical benefit too. Road feeder movements make a central hub reachable from a wide catchment without needing a local flight, which broadens the realistic choice of departure point. It also means that a delay on a road leg is an air freight delay, with the same consequences and none of the visibility.
An industrial catchment and what it asks of a hub
The region around a central European hub produces machinery, vehicles and components, precision and laboratory goods, chemicals and pharmaceutical products. That mix asks for handling rather than just carriage: heavy single pieces that need equipment to move, temperature-controlled goods that cannot sit on a warm apron, and regulated commodities whose paperwork is part of the cargo.
It also produces a particular kind of urgency. An industrial air shipment is often a repair part or a component that a production line is waiting for, where the freight cost is trivial next to the cost of the stoppage it prevents. Those shipments are booked at short notice, and they are the ones that most need a routing that can be executed rather than one that merely looks fast.
Both bellyhold and freighter capacity serve a hub like this. Bellyhold rides on passenger aircraft and follows the passenger network; freighters are configured for cargo and take larger and heavier pieces more readily. An industrial catchment tends to need both, and which one a shipment can use is often decided by the size of its largest piece rather than by preference.
What routing through a central hub asks of a shipper
Routing through a hub means a shipment is consolidated with others, which is what makes the economics work and what introduces the dependency. Consolidation happens to a schedule. Goods that arrive after the cut-off for a departure wait for the next one, and no amount of urgency at the point of collection changes that.
The most valuable thing a shipper can supply is therefore an honest readiness date. A consignment described as ready on Monday and actually packed on Wednesday does not simply move two days later; it may miss the pattern of departures it was planned around.
The second most valuable thing is accurate measurement. Because chargeable weight is determined by whichever is greater — the actual weight or a figure derived from the space the goods occupy — a consignment measured at acceptance can be charged differently from a consignment described from memory.
