Three routings, three different questions
Cargo between China and Germany can move in a container on a vessel, in the hold of an aircraft, or overland by rail. These are not three grades of the same product. They differ in what they cost per unit of cargo, in how much cargo they can absorb, in how exposed they are to disruption, and in how much notice they need.
Sea freight absorbs volume. It is the routing that makes sense when the quantity is large, the value per kilogram is modest and the delivery date is planned rather than reactive. Air freight is bought when the cost of the goods being late exceeds the cost of flying them — a production line waiting on a component, a launch date, a recall. Rail sits between the two on most of these measures, which makes it attractive in principle and awkward in practice: its viability changes for reasons that have nothing to do with freight, so it has to be confirmed for the period in question rather than assumed from a shipment that moved last year.
The mistake worth avoiding is deciding the mode first and then discovering what it demands. The commodity, the quantity, the packing and the consequence of being late decide the mode. Working in that order also produces a far better enquiry.
The port of entry is a decision, not a formality
Germany has its own deep-sea container gateways on the North Sea coast, and it is also reachable through the Dutch and Belgian ports. A shipment bound for a German address does not automatically arrive at a German port, and there is nothing irregular about it arriving at a neighbouring one.
Two things pull in opposite directions. A gateway that lies further inland puts the cargo closer to its destination and shortens the road or rail leg; one that sits nearer open water shortens the sea leg. Hamburg is reached by a passage up the Elbe; Bremerhaven sits at the coast. Which trade-off wins depends on where the goods are actually going and on how well the gateway is connected to that place — not on which port is better known.
The second consideration is how well served the routing is. A gateway with more onward options gives a shipment more ways to recover when something slips. That resilience does not appear on a quotation, and it is often the difference between a delay that is absorbed and one that reaches the customer.
The inland leg is part of the routing
German industry is distributed across the country rather than gathered at the coast, so the distance from the quay to the door is frequently the larger part of the inland picture. Treating the sea leg as the shipment and the inland leg as an administrative afterthought is how a competitive sea rate turns into an uncompetitive delivered cost.
The inland leg is also where the practical constraints live. Whether the delivery site can receive a full-size vehicle, whether there is a dock or a forklift, whether there is a booking system, whether the goods can be tail-lifted — none of that is visible from the port, and all of it changes what has to be arranged.

Westbound: China to Germany
Westbound cargo is typically manufactured or semi-finished product: components, assemblies, consumer goods, materials feeding a European production or distribution chain. Export formalities are completed on the Chinese side and import formalities on the European side, and which party is responsible for arranging and paying for each is set by the sale contract and the agreed delivery term.
That split is the single most common cause of a shipment stopping. A buyer who assumed the seller was arranging carriage to the door, and a seller who assumed the buyer was collecting, produce the same outcome: cargo sitting somewhere neither of them has instructed anyone to move it from. Settle the delivery term in writing before the goods are packed, not after they have arrived.
Eastbound: Germany to China
Eastbound the cargo profile changes. Capital equipment, machinery, spares, instruments and production components feature more prominently, and machinery behaves differently from palletised consumer goods. Weight is concentrated in a small footprint, lifting and securing points matter, crating is engineering rather than packing, and a piece that exceeds the internal space of a standard container turns an ordinary booking into a specialist one.
Requirements on the receiving side vary by commodity and by the arrangements in force, and they change. They must be confirmed with the relevant authority or a licensed customs agent for the specific goods rather than inferred from a previous shipment of something similar.
