The box that cubes out
Most manufactured goods are bulky relative to their weight. Packaged consumer products, textiles, plastic goods, components in protective packaging and furniture all fill a container's space long before they approach its weight limit.
For that cargo the 40ft is the economic unit: it roughly doubles the space of a 20ft box for considerably less than double the cost of moving it, and the weight limit never becomes the binding constraint.
Two twenties are not one forty
It is tempting to treat the choice as arithmetic, and it is not. Two 20ft containers carry substantially more total weight than one 40ft, because each brings its own payload allowance. They also cost two sets of handling, two road movements, two sets of terminal charges and two deliveries.
The reverse case matters just as much: a 40ft box cannot be split between two delivery addresses without unpacking it, while two 20ft units can go to two places. Which arrangement is cheaper depends on the weight, the destinations and the handling at each end, and it is worth asking rather than assuming the larger box wins.
Where a longer box stops being deliverable
A 40ft container arrives on a vehicle that needs room to approach, turn and be positioned. Urban sites, older industrial premises and yards with a tight entrance often cannot take one, even when they handle 20ft units routinely.
This is the most common avoidable failure on a full-container import: the box is right for the cargo and wrong for the address. Access is established before the unit is chosen, not after the vehicle has been dispatched.
Rated weights differ between operators
Maximum gross weight for a 40ft dry container is not a single industry figure. Among the publishers checked for this page it is stated at two materially different values — a divergence of more than two tonnes in the rating itself, not a rounding of the same number. Both are in the specification table below, each against the operator that publishes it.
That difference flows straight into the payload a shipper may plan against. It is settled from the specification of the container actually being supplied, and by the road limits at each end, rather than from a general figure.
