Capital equipment usually moves as a project rather than a consignment. Several pieces have to reach a site that is not always ready to receive them.

Capital equipment moves as a project, not a shipment
A production line, a processing plant or a large installation does not arrive in one piece. It arrives as a set of related consignments, sometimes from several suppliers in several countries, which have to converge on one site in an order that lets the installation proceed.
That makes sequence as important as speed. The frame is needed before the equipment that mounts on it, and the control cabinets are of no use before the structure they control exists. A piece arriving out of sequence is not an early win; it is an obstruction occupying space that the next delivery needs.
It also means the movement has a critical path. One late item can hold an entire installation team, and the cost of that is measured in the day rate of everyone waiting, not in the value of the item. Identifying which pieces sit on the critical path is the most useful planning step available.
Site readiness governs the delivery date
Industrial equipment is usually delivered to a site under construction or under modification, and the site's readiness, not the supplier's, decides when delivery is genuinely possible.
The practical questions are physical. Is the access route capable of taking the vehicle and the load? Is there a crane or other lifting capacity, and is it available on the day? Is the floor finished and able to bear the item? Is the opening through which the equipment must pass large enough, and is it still there, since openings are sometimes closed up before the equipment arrives?
Because these answers change as the build progresses, a delivery date agreed months earlier should be reconfirmed close to the event. A delivery that arrives to a site that cannot take it becomes a storage problem instantly, and storage at short notice is the most expensive kind.
Preservation, storage and the gap before commissioning
Equipment frequently arrives before it can be installed, and the interval between arrival and use is where a lot of avoidable damage happens.
Preservation is the answer, and it has to be specified for the expected duration rather than for the journey. Bare machined surfaces need protection against corrosion, assemblies need to stay immobilised, moisture needs to be controlled inside sealed packaging, and crating needs to withstand being moved more than once. Equipment stored outdoors on a construction site is exposed to conditions no packaging designed for a warehouse anticipated.
The other half is knowing what is in each crate. On a multi-piece delivery, contents must be identifiable from the outside, because opening crates to find out what is inside defeats the preservation and creates its own damage. Consistent marking against a packing list is what makes a staged delivery workable.
Spare parts run on a different clock
Once equipment is installed, it generates a second and entirely different freight requirement. Spare parts are small, unpredictable and urgent, because they are usually ordered when something has already stopped working.
That reverses the priorities of the original delivery. The capital movement was planned months ahead and optimised for cost and sequence; the spare part is booked at short notice and optimised for time, with the freight cost almost irrelevant next to the value of restarting the plant.
It is worth planning for this before it is needed. Knowing which parts are critical, where they are held and how they would be moved at short notice turns an emergency into a procedure, and it is far easier to establish while the equipment is being installed than during a breakdown.

- Clear external marking on every crate, matched to a packing list, so contents are identifiable without opening.
- A defined route for urgent spare parts, established before the first breakdown rather than during it.

- Say how long equipment may stand before installation and whether it will be stored inside or outside.
- Identify any piece that is oversized, indivisible or requires specialised handling, since it may drive the whole plan.
- Separate the capital movement from the spare parts requirement, because the two need different arrangements.

Describe what the goods demand of the movement.
Handling, dimensions, timing and site constraints are more useful than an industry label on its own.
