Freight Forwarding Considerations for Machinery
A machine is one piece that cannot be divided, and it puts its weight in a small number of places. Almost every constraint on the shipment follows from that.

One piece that cannot be split
Most freight problems can be relieved by dividing the consignment. Machinery usually cannot. A machine tool, a press or a production module arrives as a single item, and if it does not fit the equipment or the route, no amount of rearranging the load will help.
This means the decisive facts are established before anything else is discussed: the dimensions of the piece as it will actually be presented, its weight, and whether it can be partly dismantled without affecting warranty, calibration or the ability to reassemble it on site.
Where a machine exceeds the dimensions that ordinary road or container equipment accommodates, the shipment changes category entirely. Specialised equipment, route planning and permissions may be involved, and the applicable limits and approval processes differ by country and by road authority. They have to be confirmed for the specific route rather than assumed from another one.
Weight in the wrong places
A machine rarely spreads its weight evenly. Mass concentrates around a motor, a bed, a base casting or a hydraulic assembly, and the centre of gravity is often high, off-centre, or both. That is a stability and safety question during transport and a lifting question at every handover.
For this reason a machinery shipment needs more than a weight figure. It needs to be clear where the weight sits, where the designated lifting points are, whether the item may be slung or must be lifted from beneath, and what the base can bear without deforming. A machine damaged by being lifted incorrectly is damaged before it has travelled anywhere.
Concentrated weight also matters to the loading surface. A heavy item resting on small feet exerts a very different pressure from the same weight spread across a pallet, and spreading that load with suitable bearers is part of preparing the shipment rather than an optional refinement.
Loading and unloading are part of the transport plan
For general cargo, loading is a routine event. For machinery it is frequently the most demanding part of the whole movement, and it happens twice.
The questions are the same at both ends and are answered too late remarkably often. Is there a crane or a forklift with sufficient capacity, and is it available on the day? Is there hard standing that will bear the vehicle and the lift? Is there overhead clearance? Can the machine be moved from the point of unloading to where it will stand, and by what means? Where the answer at either end is unclear, the shipment is not ready to book.
The vehicle choice follows from these answers rather than preceding them. Whether a machine is loaded from the side, from above or from the rear determines the equipment needed, and a machine that must be craned cannot be delivered somewhere a crane cannot reach.
Protecting a machine from its own journey
Machines are vulnerable to things that do not trouble most cargo: vibration working fasteners loose, shock damaging bearings and precision surfaces, and moisture corroding machined faces that were left bare.
Preparation usually means immobilising moving assemblies, protecting bare metal against corrosion, and building crating that supports the machine at its strong points instead of merely enclosing it. Where a journey involves sea or long storage, humidity is a longer-running threat than impact, and preservation for the duration matters more than packaging for the loading bay.
Securing on the vehicle is the other half. Concentrated weight and a high centre of gravity change how a load must be restrained, and a securing plan that suits stacked pallets does not suit a single dense object. This is worth agreeing in advance, because it is decided at the moment of loading and that is the worst moment to start the discussion.

- Marked lifting points, a stated centre of gravity, and instructions on whether the item may be slung.
- Crating and preservation appropriate to the length of the journey and to any storage at either end.
- Confirmed lifting equipment, ground bearing and clearance at both origin and destination.
- A securing plan suited to a single dense item rather than to a general load.

- Give measured dimensions and weight, not nominal catalogue figures, since crating changes both.
- Say whether the machine can be partly dismantled, and what that costs in reassembly or recalibration.
- Describe the lifting arrangements available at each end and whether they are available on the intended day.
- State the loading method the machine requires: from above, from the side, or from the rear.
- Identify anything that projects, overhangs or cannot be tilted, because each changes the equipment needed.
- Where the route may require permissions for an oversized load, allow time for them to be established for that specific route.
