Freight forwarding

Spain: a long way past a narrow entrance

Almost all road freight between Spain and the rest of Europe crosses the Pyrenees at one of two ends, and then faces some of the longest internal distances in Western Europe. Both halves of that need to be in the plan.

Which end of the Pyrenees, and how far after them

The Pyrenees permit heavy road traffic at the Mediterranean end and at the Atlantic end and very little between, so the corridor a movement uses is decided by the Spanish destination rather than by preference. A load routed over the wrong end can add several hundred kilometres inside Spain, and none of that is visible in the international leg of a quotation.

Internal Spanish distances are among the longer ones in Western Europe. Madrid sits in the centre of the peninsula, far from every port and every border, so a national distribution movement inside Spain is a serious road operation in its own right rather than a final delivery leg.

Capacity moves with the harvest

Spain exports a large volume of fruit and vegetables into Northern Europe, much of it temperature-controlled and much of it seasonal, and that traffic takes a substantial share of northbound capacity out of the peninsula when it is running.

For general freight the effect is felt on the return leg and therefore in the price. A rate quoted in one part of the year is not a rate for another, and a Spanish movement planned months ahead is worth re-checking rather than assuming.

Gateways

How goods reach and leave this market.

  • The eastern Pyrenees corridor towards Barcelona and the Mediterranean coast
  • The western Pyrenees corridor towards the Basque Country and the Atlantic north
  • Mediterranean container ports serving Asia via Suez and North African short-sea trades
  • Bilbao and the northern coast, handling the Atlantic and Northern European trades
  • Air cargo through the Madrid and Barcelona hubs

Quoting

What shapes a quote here.

  • The destination region, which decides which Pyrenean corridor the movement should use
  • Whether the goods are temperature-controlled, since that puts the load into the most seasonal part of this market, where capacity moves with the harvest
  • The time of year, which changes available capacity on northbound legs more here than on most European lanes
  • Whether the delivery is to a distribution centre with a booking system or to a works address
  • Whether onward movement to Portugal is involved, which extends the internal leg again
