Trade lane
France ↔ Spain
The Pyrenees permit heavy road freight at the Mediterranean end and at the Atlantic end, and very little in between. Which end a movement uses is decided by the destination, and getting it wrong is expensive.

Lane overview
Define the exact collection and delivery points.
The country pair establishes the lane. What the transport actually costs and how it is planned depends on the postcodes, the cargo and the dates in the request.
A barrier with exactly two doors
No other European corridor concentrates traffic quite like this one. The Alps have several usable crossings and alternatives between them; the Pyrenees, for heavy goods vehicles, effectively have two — the Mediterranean coast at one end and the Basque coast at the other.
The consequence is that the internal legs on both sides matter more than the crossing itself. A load destined for Bilbao that has routed via the Mediterranean end has added several hundred kilometres inside Spain, and none of that appears in the international portion of a quotation.
The Spanish leg is usually the longer half
Madrid sits in the centre of the peninsula, far from either crossing. Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, Zaragoza and Seville are substantial journeys from one another. For a French shipper, the Spanish internal movement is frequently longer than the French one that preceded it.
This is why the useful question is never "how long to Spain" but "how long to this address", and why an enquiry that gives a region rather than a country gets a materially better answer.
Produce sets the northbound market
Spain exports fruit and vegetables into France and further north in large, seasonal, temperature-controlled volume. When that flow is running it takes a substantial share of northbound capacity out of the peninsula.
General freight feels this on the return leg and therefore in the price. A rate quoted outside the season is not a rate for inside it, and a Spanish movement planned months ahead is worth re-checking rather than carrying forward.
Southbound and northbound are different markets, not directions
Southbound carries manufactured goods, components, chemicals and consumer products into a large market. Northbound carries produce, automotive output and industrial goods, with the produce component seasonal and time-critical.
Because the northbound flow peaks predictably, the imbalance is not constant. A shipper with flexibility about timing can sometimes buy a materially better rate by moving outside the peak rather than by negotiating within it.
Inside the Union, and reaching beyond it
Neither frontier on this corridor is a customs frontier for goods in free circulation: France, Spain and Portugal all sit inside the European Union customs territory.
A movement continuing into Portugal stays inside the Union; one continuing to Morocco or beyond does not, and that changes what the movement is from the moment it is planned rather than at the port.
Quote inputs
What changes the answer on this lane.
- The Spanish region, which decides which end of the Pyrenees the movement should use
- Whether the goods are temperature-controlled, which puts them in the most seasonal part of this market
- When in the harvest cycle the movement falls, since that decides how much northbound space is already committed
- Whether the movement continues into Portugal, which extends the internal leg again
- Whether the receiving site books vehicles in, and how wide the slot is
Documentation
Paperwork this corridor involves.
- A CMR consignment note for the road carriage, covering the whole movement rather than each national section
- The temperature trace for a controlled load, which a food consignee on this corridor will normally ask to see before accepting it
- Documentation specific to food products where those are being carried, which is a separate regime from customs
- Where the goods continue outside the Union, the export documentation for that leg, arranged before the vehicle departs
From corridor to shipment

The country pair is only the frame. The operating answer depends on the exact sites, goods and timing.
