Poland can be reached from Asia by sea across the Baltic or overland from the east, and the two routings have almost nothing in common. Each carries a structural constraint worth understanding before choosing.

Two physically different ways in
Poland has its own Baltic coastline with deep-water container handling, notably at Gdańsk, and it sits at the western end of the overland rail approach from Asia. That gives the country two genuinely separate ways of receiving Asian cargo, rather than one way with variations.
They are not interchangeable. The sea routing carries large quantities at low cost per container and is planned well ahead. The overland routing is shorter in distance and different in character, and its usability changes for reasons that sit entirely outside logistics. Treating one as a substitute for the other at short notice is how a plan comes apart.
A Baltic call is not the same as a North Sea call
Some deep-sea services reach the Baltic directly. In other cases a container is discharged in the North Sea range and continues to a Baltic port on a smaller feeder vessel. Both deliver the box to the same quay, and they are not the same shipment.
A feeder leg adds a handling point and ties the shipment's arrival to two services rather than one. If the main vessel is late, the feeder connection is the thing that breaks, and the delay is not the sum of the two legs but the wait for the next connection. Whether a direct call applies to a specific routing is a fact to be checked at the time of booking, not something to be inferred from the port pair.
Against that, feedering opens routings that a direct call would not, and it is frequently the sensible answer. The point is not that one is better — it is that a quotation which does not say which one applies has left out something the shipper needs.
The change of gauge at the eastern border
The overland approach to Poland from the east crosses a change of railway track gauge. The track east of the border is built to a different width from the track inside the European Union, so a train cannot simply continue. Containers are transferred between wagons, or wagons have their running gear changed, at terminals built specifically for the purpose — Małaszewicze is one of them.
This is a permanent feature of the geography, not a disruption. It is also a point where capacity is finite and where a queue can form, so it belongs in any assessment of an overland routing rather than being treated as a technicality.
Nothing here should be read as a statement that any Eurasian rail routing is currently running, running well, or available. Whether such a routing is viable at a given time depends on circumstances that change, and it must be confirmed for the period in question. Poland is a market and a corridor at the same time
Cargo arriving in Poland may be for Poland, or Poland may be the point at which it enters the European Union on its way to central Europe. Polish manufacturing and distribution generate substantial demand of their own, and Polish terminals also feed road movements further south and west.
That matters for gateway choice. A Baltic entry with a short inland leg is an efficient shape for Polish-bound cargo. For cargo bound elsewhere, the Baltic entry has to be weighed against a North Sea entry on the whole routing rather than on the sea leg alone, because the inland distance changes the answer.
Westbound: China to Poland
Westbound volumes on this corridor are heavily containerised consumer and industrial goods. The recurring decision is gateway and inland mode: a Polish Baltic call with a short road leg, a North Sea gateway with a longer inland leg, or an overland routing if one is viable at the time.
Where the goods are for a Polish consignee, import formalities are European Union formalities completed in Poland, and the practical questions are ordinary: who is the declarant, is that arrangement already in place, and does the consignee have the standing to act. Where the goods are only passing through Poland, the position is different and needs to be established in advance with a licensed agent.
Eastbound: Poland to China
Eastbound cargo out of Poland is more often industrial output, components, processed materials and equipment. The constraint shifts from routing choice to timing: the inland leg to the gateway becomes part of the critical path, because a container that reaches the port after the cut-off does not travel, and the next opportunity is not the following day.
That makes the inland leg worth planning generously rather than tightly. The saving from a late collection is small; the cost of missing a vessel is not, and it falls on the shipper regardless of which party arranged the road move.
